Match Reports 2005/2006
The 1st Team Managers View 2005/2006 - David Hunter
Welcome to Dent 1st Team managers view of the latest game we played and review of the season so far
I was appointed manager at the start of the 2005/06 season having played for the 1st team for the past 10 years.
At the age of 30 I think I am the youngest manager Dent have had.

Pre season didn't go to well
with leading scorer Paul Boustead leaving to join Lunesdale, Keith Burrow
dropping down to the 2nd team and Ben smith out injured resulting in losing
all 3 games.
We started the season with a
4-4 draw at home to Kendal Celtic, drawing level with the last kick
of the game with a Nigel Hoggarth strike, Graham Sowerby, Robert Moffatt and
Andrew Burrow also on target
Next up were cavetti united who are one of the top sides this year, we lost 4-1, Steve Hoggarth with our goal and Gary Bowman man of the match Next we were home to Kendal co rs losing 1-0 but a much improved performance again Gary Bowman man of the match Week 4 saw us travel to Penrtih United with a very young side, Steve Wilson making his debut at centre back and Paul Farrell at left back, we went a goal down after 10 mins but drew level in the 2nd half through Steve Hoggarth and then went on to win the game with a man of the match Graham Sowerby strike. A craven cup match came next, being drawn Away to Grassington, Jon Richardson making his debut and Richard Neal playing in goal with Gary Bowman on holiday
Jon opened the scoring then 2
goals from the home team and a Steve Hoggarth penalty
and a penalty save from Richard sent the tie into extra time, but 2 late
goals sent us out.
Back to league action next, i was at a friends wedding so sent the team of to Kirkoswald hoping for a good result, not to be losing 7-1 and then the following week losing 4-1 at Home to Wetheriggs rs (Steve with both goals), Time for changes.
Senior Cup away to Appleby
Changing
formation to 4-5-1 made us a solid looking side losing 4-0 but playing much
better.
Home to Penrith Utd next losing 4-3 in a game we didn't deserve to lose, (returning Ben Smith on target and a brace from Graham Sowerby) Manager returns to the starting line up at Home to Shap, Ben getting back to full fitness with 2 goals and a excellent Steve Hogarth hat-trick see us win 5-2
Cup action again this time at
home to another 1st div side Kendal town rs, another good performance
just losing 1-0 in a game that could of gone either way
Back to league action with a trip to leaders Carvetti utd, 2 goals from Steve, 1 from Ben and a Nigel Hogarth header see us to a impressive 4-2 win. Next away to unbeaten Burniside going down 1-0 but again playing well and unlucky to lose this one. Again away, this time to Kendal co rs drawing 2-2 with Steve and Richard Neal scoring but with Steve injuring his knee took the shine of the result.
Div 2 cup 1st rd
Home to Burniside, a Robert Moffatt goal and another from man of the match Jon Rich see us to a 2-0 win and out best performance of the season so far.
Xmas break comes at a bad
time for us with the team playing well but it gives top scorer Steve time to
get fit again without missing too many matches.
24th of dec we played our 2nd
team with all money raised going to the Alan Wilson(2nd team
goalkeeper) broken ankle fund!.
A great day for the club with
everyone turning up to play and having a drink with our sponsors afterwards.
7th Jan Away to Ullswater Gaz Bowman Steve Cayley Richard Neal Thomas Hartley Dave Hunter Robert Moffatt Andrew Burrow Nigel Hoggarth Bradley Dalziel Ben Smith Joe Woof
With Steve injured, Jon at a
wedding and Graham out with flu I could hand a debut to transfer window
signing Bradley Dalziel.
After an even start Ben
forced a good save from the home keeper and then was brought down when clean
through on goal but strangely no action was taken with the last defender.
Against the run of play
Ullswater score from a near post flick on from a corner on 35 mins
2nd half we have all the ball
but could not make it count with a goal and fall 3-0 down with 2 more set
piece goals, Ben scores our consolation goal in a disappointing result

At last a game on!
With only playing 1 match
in the last 7 weeks the team seemed happy just to be playing, I decided
to change the formation of the team to see if we could score a few more
goals.
The match started well
for us with Ben hitting the bar in the first min and brad striking the
post early on as well.
against the run of play
Shap score after 25 mins, a good save from Gaz rebounded to a Shap
striker who finished well from 25 yards
we draw level on 35 mins,
a deep free kick taken by buzz is headed in by badge at the far post,
no more chances in a
scrappy 1st half
we take the lead on the
hour direct from a Buzz corner and then went 3-1 up with Ben converting
a Richard flick on from a long throw in taken by badge
Shap pull one back with a
good finish from the edge of the penalty box but buzz seals a 4-2 win on
75 mins with a powerful run and strike from 20 yards
highlight of the match
was Nigel bursting the ball with a "toe neber"!
4/2/06 - 1/4 final Mason & Freeman Cup Dent v Kendal Celtic G Bowman S Cayley R Neal T Hartley D Hunter G Sowerby R Moffat N Hoggarth B Dalziel A Burrow B Smith
I decided to keep the
same formation as last week for our most important match of the
season so far.
With john away and
last weeks man of the match bully unwell (but playing) preparation
not ideal
10 mins in and brad
has to come off with a back problems, on comes block to play from
the left of midfield
we start slowly and
go 2-0 down after 20 mins, the first a well worked goal and the
second an unstoppable free kick,
so I decide to drop
buzz into midfield to try and get on the ball, the move works and
Ben pulls a goal back from a badge cross.
we made a couple of
chances before half time but block could not convert them so go in
2-1 down
2nd half starts well
with Block, Ben, buzz and Richard all going close and we limit
Celtic to breakaway chances
Keith comes on for
last 20 mins and sets up Nigel but his lob seemed goal bound but
some how bounces onto the post and away from goal
after that chance it
felt like it was not our day and ends in a 2-1 defeat, the team gave
our all but not to be.
man of the match was
Gary with some top draw saves
next week we
play Celtic away in the league
11th Feb

With bully away and
buzz having to work it meant a first start of the season in the 1st
team for Keith, also it gave a chance to badge to play a more
central role just behind Ben up front.
Ingleton started the
better but put there chance wide when through on goal, Keith and
Nigel soon get into the match and start to control the midfield and
badge and Ben combine well upfront in a even first half.
Block and Ben go
close to opening the scoring in a good first half for us and with
the defence led superbly by Jon it meant a 0-0 score line at half
time
On 60 mins Ingleton
take the lead, we clear the ball to the edge of the area but see the
ball fly into the top corner from an unstoppable shot ( good goal).
We continue to create
chances with Ben setting up badge but his shot went wide, buzz comes
on for brad on the right of midfield with 20 mins left and causes
problems for the Ingleton defence.
With 10 mins left i
thought we had got drawn level but Richards header just goes over
the bar, a couple more half chances but we cant draw level and lose
0-1
The team played very
well today with Jon man of the match and Keith a close second.
25th February Home vs Northbank ( Carlisle Rs ) G Bowman S Cayley R Neal J Richardson T Hartley G Sowerby K Burrow R Moffatt S Wilson A Burrow B Smith
With Nigel away for
the weekend it meant bully could come straight back into
midfield along side Keith, buzz just playing off Ben and brad
dropping down to the bench for the visit of the league leaders
We start well and
have a couple of chances in an even first 30 mins, Ben having a good
shot turned round the post.
Northbank take the
lead on 35 mins after a mix up in our defence and go 2-0 up just
before half time from a good finish from 20 yards.
we go in at half time
behind but played well enough to be level.
I decide to play
badge upfront with ben to give us more pace and move buzz out to the
right to get into the space.
2nd half starts well
for us and on 60 mins pull a goal back, Ben is pulled down in the
box and Richard converts the penalty.
we continue to press
for an equalizer and play some good football as we control the 2nd
half, buzz goes closest to pulling us level but he couldn't reach a
Ben cross.
The match ends in a
2-1 defeat but we take a lot out of the game as we played very well
against the top team in our league.
4th March
Away V Kendal

match postponed -
frozen pitch
11th March
No Fixture
due to Dentdale
Run
18th March Home v Keswick RS G Bowman S Cayley R Neal T Hartley D Hunter A Burrow R Moffatt N Hogarth S Wilson G Sowerby B Smith
I decided to
keep the same formation for the visit of Keswick with Ben
and badge playing upfront and buzz on the right of midfield
as we played well with this formation in our last match 3
weeks ago
We start well
and create a good chance early on but badge puts it over the
bar, we continue to press and both Ben and block go though
on goal but both of them get taken out by goalkeeper and
defender but the ref decides not to send either off and the
free kicks both go to waste
After 20 mins
Keswick take the lead with a good finish from there number 9
but we come back well but cant find a goal to draw us level
On 40 mins we
go 2-0 down, we were on the attack but lose the ball and get
caught on the break and so go in at half time behind
We start the
2nd half well and get a goal back though Ben from a long
throw from badge on 60 mins
We continue
to press but cant take our chances and we rely on Gaz to
keep them out with some excellent saves
We didn't
play well enough to win this one but i think we should of
had a draw, Gaz man of the match with some world class saves
25th March Home v Burneside G Bowman D Hunter R Neal T Hartley A Mason G Sowerby N Hoggarth R Moffatt S Wilson S Cayley B Smith Team News John out after op on his leg Buzz dropping down to the RS
I decide
to play a 4-5-1 formation against burneside to try and
stop there creative midfield player from getting on the
ball, but we start badly and are 2-0 down after 10 mins
Andrew
and myself swap full back positions and this seems to
give us a better balance and we play better but still go
in at half time behind
2nd half
starts like the 1st and we fall 4-0 down after 60 mins
We
regroup and play better and create a few chances but the
away goalkeeper makes some fine saves from man of our
match Ben
